Volunteer Opportunities
Day Volunteers
Day Volunteers at the Peninsula Center Library work a set work schedule each morning. Under the direction of the Day Chairpersons, these volunteers prepare the library for opening by picking up and putting up any materials that may have been left out from the previous evening. This can include processing newspapers, shelving circulating magazines, CDs, reference books, paperbacks, new magazines, microforms, file daily business table reports, and any other assigned duties.
The Library Shop
The Library Shop in the Peninsula Center Library is staffed completely by volunteers. The profits from the Library Shop are used to fund projects for the District.
Docent Programs
There are two docent programs at the District:
1. The Computer Docents assist Library patrons in using the Library's computer catalog, the Internet and Microsoft Office.
2. The Local History Docents work in the History Room at the Peninsula Center Library, helping patrons access a wide variety of materials related to the Palos Verdes Peninsula and its past. They also work individually on projects geared to their interests, such as typing oral histories, scanning photographs, indexing materials, creating bibliographies, and encapsulating maps.
Passport Photo Assistants
We process passport applications and need Passport Photo Assistants to help out with: 1) taking & developing passport photos; 2) helping with "traffic control" where you'd make sure all those waiting for passport processing have all the information they need and are ready to go with the agent calls their name.
Technical Services Volunteers
These volunteers provide a very important service to the District. They repair books that have been damaged due to general wear and tear. It's a detailed job with an emphasis on precise, almost invisible repairing. They also clean DVDs and CDs that have become scratched or just need a good cleaning and record and unpack incoming book purchases.
Book Sales - Retail Used & Internet
Business is booming in our Retail Used and Internet Book Sales. We're looking for volunteers for Retail Book Sales who can volunteer at least 4-8 hours per month to help with organization and/or sales of the large donations we get regularly. In our Internet Book Sales area, we're looking for people who are early morning risers (8:00 - 9:00 am during the week) who can volunteer 2 hours a week to help with various duties in this department. In both book sales areas, there are duties that can include online research for checking or pricing the donations, working on specific book categories, and keeping the books organized for easier purchasing by patrons. In Internet Book Sales duties can include packing & shipping of items that have been ordered online, processing emails and returns. Both book sales areas are currently staffed with a solid group of friendly, helpful, and committed volunteers!
